形態特徵

Plants dioecious, reddish.
Leaves concave, ovate, 1.5–2 cm long.
Male spadices cylindric, to 15 cm long; flowers sessile, perianth 6 merous, anthers numerous, connate. Female spadices oval-cylindric, 3–5 cm long; flowers without perianth; ovary reticulate, with distinct and regular ridge on surface.
Tam (1988) separated <i>Balanophora spicata</i> from <i>B. laxiflora</i> on the number of perianth parts and the shape and sculpture of the rhizome by comparing the original description and figures. However, Hansen (1972) had already pointed out that Hemsleys description is too short to provide adequate characters and his illustration misleads in suggesting 5-merous male flowers with 5 horse-shoe-shaped anthers to be the rule, while 6-merous male flowers are in fact in greater portion in the type material. The shape and sculpture of the rhizome is of less taxonomic importance, as Hansen (1972) suggested. Thus, it is better to treat them as one species.
